Los Angeles chipped away, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth to close the gap to 5-4. But Yankees catcher Austin Wells hit a solo home run in the sixth before New York poured it on in the eighth.< https://redfakir.com/ /p>

Who knows? Buehler needed no leash in Game 3. Like Schmidt, he walked the first batter he faced. Unlike Schmidt, he was in command from that point forward. Buehler was in prime postseason form, carving up Yankees hitters as he went five shutout innings on two hits and two walks while striking out five. He gave the Dodgers everything they could have asked for. The bullpen didn’t even get warm until manager Dave Roberts was preparing to call upon Brusdar Graterol for the sixth inning.

“I thought G had a pretty good jump and move around third base,” Boone said. “Tough when you're behind a few there, but a perfect throw is able to get him. I'll go back and look at it some more, though.”

Who wins the world series game today

“We’re trying to get a game tomorrow. That’s where our focus lies,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said postgame. “Hopefully we can go be this amazing story and shock the world, but right now it’s about trying to get a lead, trying to grab a game and force another one and then on from there. But we got to grab one first.”

Koufax punched out 15 and held the Yankees to two runs in a Game 1 complete game. Then, with the Dodgers up three games to none in the series (sound familiar?), Koufax again went the distance, striking out eight over nine innings of one-run ball to sweep the Yanks.

Saturday’s 4-2 victory by the Los Angeles Dodgers over the New York Yankees averaged 13.44 million on Fox, Fox Deportes and streaming. That is a 65% increase over last year’s Game 2, which at 8.15 million was the second least-viewed World Series game on record.

For the first time, co-World Series MVPs. Cey went 7-for-20 with a homer and as many walks (three) as strikeouts (three). Guerrero rebounded from 0-fers in Games 1 and 2 to go 7-for-12 with four extra-base hits. He and Yeager went back-to-back in Game 5 to erase a Yankees lead. Yeager was 4-for-14 with a double and two homers in the series.

Outside of an Aaron Judge walk...nothing going for the Yanks in the bottom of the eighth. Juan Soto lined out, and then both Giancarlo Stanton and Jazz Chisholm struck out. (Stanton fell victim to another generous interpretation of the strike zone.)

Alexwhitman.99: Hurts to watch as a Yankees fan, but an extremely well-played game by the Dodgers. Wish I could say the same for the Yankees defense in that brutal fifth inning, and all the mistakes after. Oh well, just a matter of replacing Boone.

game 1 world series 2024

Game 1 world series 2024

This series marked the twelfth World Series meeting between the Dodgers and Yankees and the first since 1981. It was also the thirteenth meeting between teams from New York City and Los Angeles for a major professional sports championship. This previously happened in four World Series (1963, 1977, 1978, 1981), three NBA Finals (1970, 1972, and 1973) and the 2014 Stanley Cup Finals. Following the 2024 World Series, LA teams held a five to four advantage over New York City teams in terms of championship matchups between the two cities.

Additionally, this World Series was contested between the two eventual winners of the most valuable player (MVP) awards in their respective leagues: Aaron Judge of the Yankees and Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers. This was the first World Series since 2012 (when Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants faced Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers) to feature the two league MVPs from that season. Judge won the American League (AL) MVP Award in 2022, while Ohtani won two AL MVP awards unanimously with the Los Angeles Angels in 2021 and 2023. During the 2024 regular season, Judge hit 58 home runs while Ohtani hit 54 during his 50–50 season, meaning that this is the first time in Major League Baseball history that two batters who hit 50 home runs in the same regular season are playing against each other in the World Series. Because of the renewal of the rivalry between the two storied franchises, and the World Series debuts of both Ohtani and Judge, many regarded the matchup as a "dream" World Series in the lead-up to the event.

In all best-of-seven series, teams winning Game 1 have gone on to take the series 125 of 191 times (65%). That includes 23 of 29 times (79%) in the World Series since 1995. In all series under the current 2-3-2 format, teams winning Game 1 at home have gone on to take the series 68 of 101 times (67%).

In the bottom of the second inning, Tommy Edman hit a solo home run off Rodón as the Dodgers took a 1–0 lead. Juan Soto hit a solo home run off Yamamoto in the top of the third inning to tie the game. In the bottom of the inning, Mookie Betts hit a single followed by a Teoscar Hernández two-run home run and a solo home run by Freddie Freeman to give the Dodgers a 4–1 lead. Yamamoto allowed only one hit in .mw-parser-output .frac .mw-parser-output .frac .num,.mw-parser-output .frac .den .mw-parser-output .frac .den .mw-parser-output .sr-only 6+1⁄3 innings in his start. In the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, Shohei Ohtani had a left shoulder subluxation when he slid in his steal attempt at second base, as he was caught stealing to end the seventh inning; he lay at second base in pain until his trainer tended him to leave the field. With the Dodgers leading by three runs, Blake Treinen was sent in to close out the game in the top of the ninth. He gave up a leadoff single to Soto, who advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Aaron Judge struck out, Giancarlo Stanton hit a ground ball that bounced off the third base bag and into the outfield, scoring Soto. The Yankees then loaded the bases with an Anthony Rizzo hit-by-pitch and Jazz Chisholm Jr. single, but Volpe struck out for the second out. After the Volpe at-bat, Treinen was replaced with Alex Vesia, who got pinch-hitter Jose Trevino to fly out on the first pitch, ending the game and giving Los Angeles a 2–0 series lead.

So the Yankees took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 10th. Ohtani came to the plate with two on and one out. The Yankees turned to the lefty Cortes, who hadn’t pitched since Sept. 18 because of elbow trouble.
